Contribute to the project

Map editing is obviously not a project that we monopolize. It’s not “our project.“ Anybody can do it in Central Asia. You don’t need to contact us or go through us to help out with mapping. You can help to map Central Asia on your own. Join Open Street Map as an editor, take their tutorial and read their how-to instructions and you can start mapping right away - without any GIS or cartography skills needed.

The most useful editing contribution right now (2025) would be to add forests, smaller streams and minor roads region-wide in the mountains. For areas that need attention, try the Muksu Range in eastern Tajikistan (northwest of the town of Murghob), all areas around Sarez Lake, and the western section of the border with Kyrgyzstan. For Kyrgyzstan, nearly all mountain regions need work. We are currently working on the Alay Mountains (“Pamir-Alay“).

Satellite imagery is often years out of date, so we appreciate info on destroyed bridges, new bridges, new roads, etcetera in remote region where a bridge may be vital more access to the mountains. You can also tell us about new guesthouses and camps. The best way to do this (if you are on the ground) is to use your map app to report a mistake or a suggestion for inclusion on the map (many map apps have this feature). This then appears on the Open Street Maps editing platform for editors to see and fix. You can also contact us directly.
